L'histoire des Comtés unis de Prescott et RussellThe story of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell

Before it was a region, Prescott-Russell was a gamble: clearing land between the Ottawa River and the Quebec border to build lasting communities. Here's 230+ years of history — and why it still matters when you buy a home here.

In 1792, the area formed the northern sections of Glengarry and Stormont Counties, in the Eastern District of Upper Canada. It was settlement country: the earliest settlers, Joseph La Rocque-Brune and Raymond Duffaut, arrived in 1791 near present-day L'Orignal.

In 1796, Nathaniel Treadwell acquired the seigneury of Pointe-à-l'Orignal — 23,000 acres — built a sawmill and a grist-mill there, and opened roads. It was the area's first major organized development.

Deux noms, deux hommesTwo names, two men

In 1800, Russell County was created from Stormont County and named for Peter Russell, Administrator of Upper Canada. Prescott County is named for Robert Prescott, Governor-in-Chief from 1797 to 1807 — and the town of Prescott, laid out in 1810 by Edward Jessup, was named in his honour.

L'Orignal, point d'origineL'Orignal, point of origin

In 1812, the community took the name L'Orignal: Pointe à l'Orignal meant "Moose Point" — moose crossed the Ottawa River there. In 1816, Prescott and Russell became separate counties, and L'Orignal became the capital of the Ottawa District. In 1820, the two counties merged to form the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (some sources give 1822 for full unification).
